Accurate fence estimates are the foundation of a profitable fencing business. Underestimate and you'll lose money on every job; overestimate and you'll lose the bid to a competitor. This guide gives you the exact pricing formulas and per-linear-foot rates that profitable fence contractors use in 2026.

The Fence Estimating Formula

Every fence estimate has three components:

Total Price = Material Cost (+ 30-50% markup) + Labor Cost + Additional Costs

  • Materials: Posts, rails, pickets/panels, concrete, hardware, gates
  • Labor: Based on linear feet per day your crew can install
  • Additional: Demolition/removal, terrain difficulty, permits, delivery

Per-Linear-Foot Pricing by Fence Type

Wood privacy (6ft, dog-ear)$8–$12$10–$18$25–$45

Gate Pricing

Gates are a significant revenue add-on. Always quote gates separately:

Gate TypeMaterialInstalled Price
Single walk gate (3-4ft)Wood$200–$450
Double drive gate (10-12ft)Wood$500–$1,200
Single walk gateVinyl$300–$600
Double drive gateVinyl$700–$1,800
Single walk gateChain link$150–$350
Sliding gate (motorized)Any$1,500–$4,000

How to Calculate Material Quantities

Posts

Standard spacing is 8 feet on center for most fence types. For a 200 linear foot fence: 200 ÷ 8 = 25 sections + 1 = 26 posts. Add extra posts for corners, gates, and grade changes.

Concrete

Each post hole needs 1-2 bags of concrete (60lb or 80lb). For 26 posts: 26-52 bags. At $5–$6 per bag, concrete is $130–$312 for a 200ft fence.

Pickets

Standard 6ft dog-ear pickets are 5.5" wide. For a 200 linear foot fence: (200 × 12) ÷ 5.5 = 436 pickets. Add 10% for waste = ~480 pickets.

Rails

Most 6ft privacy fences use 3 horizontal rails per section. For 25 sections of 8ft fence: 75 rails (2x4x8 or 2x4x16).

Labor Rate Calculations

Production rates vary by fence type and crew size:

Fence Type2-Person Crew/Day3-Person Crew/Day
Wood privacy60–100 LF100–150 LF
Chain link100–150 LF150–250 LF
Vinyl80–120 LF120–180 LF
Aluminum80–120 LF120–180 LF
Farm/ranch wire200–400 LF300–600 LF

If you target $800–$1,200/day in labor revenue per 2-person crew, and your crew installs 80 LF of wood fence per day, your labor rate is $10–$15/LF.

Additional Charges to Include

  • Old fence removal: $3–$8/LF depending on type
  • Terrain/slope adjustment: Add 15-25% for hilly terrain or stepped fencing
  • Rock/difficult soil: Add $5–$15 per post hole
  • Permit fees: Pass through to client at cost + $25–$50 handling fee
  • Staining/sealing: $1.50–$3.00/LF (great upsell)
